One Dead After Truck Crashes into Detached Trailer on I-20

Covington, GA (July 6, 2020) – A man from Sumter, South Carolina died Saturday morning when a trailer allegedly came loose from another vehicle and collided with his truck in Newton County.

The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-20 near Georgia 142.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, 71-year-old William Evans of Rutledge was allegedly driving his 2018 Ford F-350 pickup truck west on I-20 while hauling a 16-foot trailer.

When he traveled over the bridges near Georgia 142, Evans allegedly lost control of the trailer. It purportedly then broke away from the hitch and went across the median striking a Volvo Tractor driven by 52-year-old Gillis Wilson.

Emergency responders rushed Wilson to the hospital where he reportedly died from his injuries. Police are still investigating the crash.
